Verizon Wireless launches smart grid offering for utilities

Verizon Wireless and Ambient Corporation are targeting utilities deploying smart grid programs with an integrated smart grid solution and open communications network announced Jan. 13. The offering, dubbed Open Smart Grid Communications Architecture is aimed at accelerating the deployment of secure smart grids, saving utilities the operational investment and maintenance cost of deploying a proprietary communications network.

The Ambient Smart Grid operates on Verizon Wireless’ network infrastructure, providing utilities with private IP clouds of connectivity and creating virtual private networks. The Ambient product extends the connectivity of the Verizon Wireless network to end user devices via Wi-Fi, powerline carrier, Zigbee or WiMax communications. The partners said smart metering products from several suppliers are already incorporated into the architecture.

“The Ambient Open Smart Grid Communications Architecture offers customers best-in-class solutions,” said Michael Brander, associate director of enterprise data for Verizon Wireless in a press release. “This is a high growth industry and Ambient gives utility customers an optimum set of solutions for long-term growth and expansion of services.”
