Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) access to Internet, video and/or voice services is being used in more than 7.6 million homes in North America, an increase of 1.15 million, or about 18% over the past year, according to a study conducted by RVA LLC for the FTTH Council. FTTH access is now available to 22 million North American homes, a 10% annual increase.

Back in 1985, the northeastern Indiana city of Auburn installed a fiber optic communications network backbone. Today, the municipality announced that it was leveraging its telecoms infrastructure further, selecting a smart grid communications backbone from Tantalus as it moves forwards with plans to install an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) that will cover both electricity and water services.

Leveraging its investment in a gigabit passive optical network (GPON), Chattanooga’s municipal broadband provider and electricity distributor EPB is working with Alcatel Lucent, provider of EPB’s GPON, to develop a cutting edge smart grid network and management system.

EPB Fiber Optics, the city of Chattanooga’s municipally owned fiber-to-the-premises network, soon will have what the organization calls “the nation’s fastest broadband service.” EPB today said its FTTP network, based on GPON, will be upgraded to support symmetrical 1 Gb/s service using equipment from Alcatel-Lucent.

Google has launched a new web site called Google Fiber for Communities where, according to a posting from a Google product manager “you can learn more about fiber networks and keep up-to-date” on the company’s plan to build experimental ultra-high speed broadband networks. The site also will enable visitors to “advocate for common-sense federal and local policies that would help fiber deployments nationwide.” The company is still in the process of reviewing applications from nearly 1100 communities wanting to be project sites and expects to announce project recipients by year-end.

Municipal utility BVU plans to deploy a Smart Grid communications platform using equipment from Tantalus. Formerly known as Bristol Virginia Utilities, BVU was one of the first utility companies to deploy a municipality-
owned fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network.

Verizon plans to begin trials of two new set-top boxes from Motorola, which the companies say are as much as 30% more energy efficient than current models. In addition, one of the models offers double the amount of storage capacity for digital video recordings. The boxes will be available in certain FiOS markets later this year.

All-fiber network connectivity is now available to 16% of North American homes, according to a study conducted by RVA Market Research on behalf of the Fiber-to-the-Home Council. Nearly 6 million homes now receive television, high-speed Internet or phone service or a combination of these offerings over these networks.

Verizon has begun testing version 6 of the Internet protocol (IPv6) with customers of its FiOS service. IPv6 expands the number of IP addresses that a network can support from approximately 4 billion to 340 trillion trillion trillion, according to the carrier.
