One opportunity that continues to build momentum is providing backhaul capacity to wireless towers. As the wireless industry continues to migrate to 3G and 4G services, their need for backhaul capacity multiplies considerably.
Several companies have announced a growing wireless backhaul opportunity. In their latest quarterly earnings announcement, Qwest reported an attractive growing business for wireless backhaul, with their ‘fiber to the cell’ program. Similarly, Level 3 recently announced a realignment of business units to aggressively pursue the wireless backhaul opportunity.
Wireless backhaul circuits are generally considered ‘middle mile’ broadband circuits. The Broadband Stimulus program has allocated $800 million for ‘middle mile’ projects. Independent telcos who aren’t already studying potential middle mile/wireless backhaul business opportunities should consider doing so. There is a real window of opportunity approaching, as the wireless industry focuses on building their 4G infrastructure.
