Skype Expands Video Chat Capabilities

Have you noticed more subscribers using Skype? You may start to see more, as TVs and cameras are now beginning to ship with Skype capabilities. Two new cameras—one from Panasonic and one from Samsung—aim to enhance the experience for people who use Skype’s Internet-based videoconferencing service. Users will need an Internet-connected television set with Skype built in and a broadband connection.

Google Releases Open Source Video Codec, Hopes to Make Web Video Easier

Looking to open up the digital video playing field to a much larger population of Web and multimedia application developers, service providers, content producers and viewers, Google yesterday released a “developer preview” version of WebM, an open source, royalty-free software package that can be used to efficiently stream high-quality audio-video over the Internet and across the digital media platform spectrum.

Verizon Highlights 4G LTE Capabilities

Verizon Wireless has embarked on some grass roots marketing in support of its high-speed wireless LTE service, which is currently in a trial in Boston. The company posted a video on YouTube that features interviews with consumers—many of college age—as they use the new service on laptops in a Boston pizzeria/ café.

RUS Accepting Applications for ‘Third’ Broadband Stimulus Funding Round

The Rural Utilities Service on May 7 issued a request for proposal for what amounts to a third round of broadband stimulus funding and has begun to accept applications for the new round.  The agency plans to make approximately $105 million available in this round, the majority ($100 million) of which will be used to help cover the costs of bringing broadband satellite service to areas that currently do not receive broadband.
