Broadband Coalition Report Advocates New Uses of Broadband

A 54-page report from the Broadband Coalition issued last week contains several novel ideas for increasing broadband adoption based on an analysis that looked at how specific broadband applications could benefit various industries and what policy moves might need to be made to facilitate those applications.

Quarterly Reports on Broadband Stimulus Program Released

Quarterly reports from the government agencies responsible for awarding broadband stimulus funding, issued last week, recap previously reported information about broadband stimulus but also contain some new details.

According to the Rural Utilities Service, as of October 12, 2009, the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) had moved 18 applications to the second step of the agency’s two-step process and “expects to move additional qualified applications on a rolling basis in the coming weeks.” The agency also said it expects to issue awards in December, although a summary page still shows a November 2009 date for “initial funding awards.”

IPTV Reaches a Milestone

By our estimation, IPTV in the independent telco industry is about a decade old. It’s sometimes hard to believe that independents have been offering IP video for over ten years now. In fact, independents really served as the backbone for IPTV in the U.S., giving vendors a reason to continue to research and develop new products, long before AT&T and other carriers came along. Those early efforts sustained IPTV vendors and help enable and build the thriving IPTV ecosystem that exists today. Assessing the Wireless Backhaul Opportunity

One opportunity that continues to build momentum is providing backhaul capacity to wireless towers. As the wireless industry continues to migrate to 3G and 4G services, their need for backhaul capacity multiplies considerably.

Several companies have announced a growing wireless backhaul opportunity. In their latest quarterly earnings announcement, Qwest reported an attractive growing business for wireless backhaul, with their ‘fiber to the cell’ program. Similarly, Level 3 recently announced a realignment of business units to aggressively pursue the wireless backhaul opportunity. Read more »
